His music is free at the moment, but when he hits the big time, a gold plated dustpan will be the first thing I ask for.

I reakon its gonna break still John.....I'd put two clamps accross there as well I think when its time to bend...maybe help to distribute the pressure.

Cool.
My son's on bass. Tell him you bumped into me online if you meet him.
The leg that's in water has bowed about 3mm so far. The one with the sponge on top hasn't moved. I put some more water on it. I reckon if the sun comes out tomorrow it'll move a bit. If I put a couple of clamps on the spine, I reckon I could twist it a bit without breaking it as well. See what happens to it over the next few days first.

Off Topic
Not a bad band yor son has going there John.
Do I detect a "Blink 182" influence there?
Have they had any interest yet from labels?
Cheers, Jack"There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

Yeh, they sound a lot like them.
No interest from majors yet but they play a fair few gigs up Newcastle/ Central Coast way, and they've just done a professional recording a few weeks ago. It should sound a bit better than that stuff on the website, which was just done on one of their computers.

observations of E
When I was measuring I noticed a few things. At the risk of muddying the waters:
* The E is roughly cut out. There are signs of power tools but Forum members would not be proud of the angles etc
* The part of the nail that usually resides in the middle of the E is all sticky as though sap has oused onto it, although the pine looks seasoned enough to me. Maybe pine never drys out.
* if i turn the E to form an M or a W and i was making this on a table saw or SCMS I can see evidence that power tools were used but nothing is square. The tops of the M (where the saw cuts out) are as smooth as but the sides are rough.
*This makes me think that the nail went in after construction of the E.
* The nail is at an angle of approx 5 degrees when looking at the E head on (looking at 3 squares)

makes me wonder if the 5 deg was to get the nail in or make it easier to drill the hole

With those dimentions.....to drill the hole......can you get a flexidrive or tool like with a right angled action whose chuck head is less than 14.5mm ? ...cause the drill bit need only be 11.5mm long if you drill in from both sides....ie. that 27mm cutout minus 11.5 = 14.5mm
Carry....If you lift the nail up....can you bend it over a bit easily? .....the nail may have been softened with a torch of sorts around the middle,,,polished up a bit before inserted,,,,bent into a U...and straighten as it was inserted into the hole. One of the bends be hidden in the middle piece, but the other wouldn't...but could be polished up......be hard to make the bending marks disappear completely though I'd guess.
When you lift the nail by the head, are there any bend marks near the hole ?

Hmmm... how well finished are the cross-grained faces?
The timber looks to be fairly bland, so is it possible he drilled all the way through either the top or bottom limb of the E into the centre limb, inserted the nail and then simply plugged the hole?
A careful bit of grain matching, a quick trim/sand of the faces of the limb et voila! End-grain plugs can be easy to match in some bland woods and hard to detect...
