    A rose engine is a specialized form of ornamental lathe. Generally has a rocking headstock, also movable fore and aft. Both of these movements are controlled by rotary and/or longitudinal cams called "rosettes." Headstock rotation may be motorized (slow speed), but usually not. Actual cutting is done by a motorized tool, not unlike a fly cutter, whose axis of rotation is parallel, or not parallel, to the headstock axis, depending on the desired effect. An almost unlimited variety of decorative designs may be executed. The workpiece is usually turned first on a conventional lathe, then attached to the rose engine's headstock spindle for ornamentation.

    I think production manufacturing of these machines ceased around 1948. Later constructions have been more or less one-off. Geoff O'Laughlin of Peninsular Woodturners has some recent plans for his "Poor Man's Rose Engine" for DIY'ers. Search this site (WWF) for links.

    Joe has described, quite well, what they used to be for, however they have a slightly different function now.

    They're for cluttering woodturner's shelves for anything up to ten years while they build their own and then, when finished, for making those same turners mutter "I wish I'd thought of that before I finished building it" and starting to plan another one...
    I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
