River Red Gum Huon Drum
I am playing around with making box drums.
I made the first one with ply and it worked out alright so I tried some better timber.
This is River Red Gum box with through dovetails.
I cut a sound hole in one side.
A recess was routed in the red gum for the front and back drumming faces.
One face is 6mm cabinet grade ply. I like the figure and colour.
On the other face I veneered Birds eye Huon Pine to one side of 3mm ply and silky oak veneer on the other.
I haven't done much veneering but with plenty of Titebond III and lots of clamps I have a good smooth bond.
I carefully trimmed the plys to fit closely in the recesses. It is not perfect. I probably should rout a groove along the join and fit some stringing.
I sanded to 500 grit and gave it a coat of Danish Oil.Scally

Scally,
Looks like good work. Be wary of that River Red Gum - it loves to kick.

Latest addition drum
Here is the latest box drum.
I posted information in the Musical section and thought I would add this to the previous pics.
This is my first success using Quilted Maple veneer.
My previous attemps with non-flat veneers have always left a couple of spots that didn't stick.
I flattened the veneer by spraying it with water /glycering mix and clamping it for a few days. Worked a treat.
The through dovetails came out pretty neat on the rosewood box. Very little chipout.
I call this a Flamenco Cajon because I fitted a snare against one skin to give the rattling effect often used in Flamenco music.
Cheers.Scally
