Veneer Softener

I am looking for a veneer softener I can make. I can purchase products commercially for about $25 to $30 per gallon, but wanted to see if there are any DIY formula’s anyone has had success with. Of course I am hoping the DIY choice is cheaper.

I don't know about veneer but in radio control aircraft modelling we use amonia solution ( weak ) to wet very thin ply and also balsa to bent it around very tight radii.

Suppose its worth a shot, shure you have some in the house.

Thanks for the response gatiep. I am looking for a softener that is not water based. Most of the commercial products are polymer based. I have seen one recipe (one of Tage Frids books) that is glycerin based, but it is very expensive to make. The problem with the water-based approach is that is expands the veneer, when it is applied, the veneer can shrink and crack. So I am likely going to have to go with a commercial product. Thanks for the assist.

Glycerine is hygroscopic....it absorbs water. So if used in a high humidity area it will probably also raise the grain.
Just a thought.
