    what RPM should a 12" saw be doing whaen cutting hardwood?

    Around 3600 rpm Saws operate (generally) at a speed in the vicinity of 3000 rpm which gives a cutting speed of 9400 feet per minute with a 12" saw blade.

    2hp (NOT 1500w) minimum

    though 3hp (NOT 2250 W) would be far better

    Bob's right, 3hp is best. I think a 2hp would do the job, but slowly. If you cut thick wood you would certainly notice it working.

    If you go for a petrol motor you need 5hp
