    Default First Cutting Board

    Hey All,

I'm sure you have all seen many a cutting board on this forum, but hey, thought I'd post mine anyway being my first board and still getting going in woodworking. I actually made it for a friends birthday coming up.

Still trying to decide on whether to oil it or not. There are a tonne of threads on this forum, so I'm trying to wade my way through them! I quite like it just as it is un-oiled, but I wouldn't mind the board a little darker I think.

Thanks to John Elliott here in Townsville and on this forum for catching up with me and supplying some timber

    Cheers,

    WILL

Looks good Will, nice variation in timber colour.
I think it will need some form of protection.

    Nice looking cutting board.

I will give it a coat of oil ONLY because it makes it a bit more attractive. It is going to be a great present.

Nice looking board! It seems from the picture you've alternated the grain to help stop warping.

Having done one myself about 15 years ago, and still have it as our main kitchen board, I placed it in a baking tray of cooking oil for about 3-4 days... rotating it every day or whatever. Used sesame oil from memory.
My idea was to impregnate the wood with the oil so water would have a hard time getting in. I occasionally give it another good soaking when I see it drying out. Whether or not it helps I have no idea.

Made from new jarrah flooring sliced up on a nice big table saw then nailed each slat to the next.
Thank God for senility... now I don't feel so silly any more.

Thanks for all the kind words. I think the vote is in - will give it a coat of oil and it should come up a treat

Very nice, what timbers did you use?

Use Paraffin oil, doesn't off and can be re-applied straight over the existing oil
    Cheers

There's a few in there; qld maple, silky oak (northern & foxtail), rosewood, salmon bean & there was one other which is just eluding me at the moment

Yeah i've read plenty that parrifin oil is the way to go. will try it out thanks DJ

I really really like this. It reminds me of a scale I did few years ago. Will post the image in a new thread...

    Default A coat of oil...

Well with my cutting board sitting around for a couple of weeks, the time has come to hand it over for a birthday present. So I finally put a coat of paraffin oil on it tonight & I think it came up really well! Especially the two maple pieces on either side of the board

    Cheers,

    WILL

Will, that is a FANTASTIC present!

Paraffin oil is petoleum-derived, isn't it? Is that ok on a food-contact surface?
