Default japan black- to seal or not to seal?

    hi everybody,
I'm building a guitar and i have just stained the rosewood fretboard with Japan black to even out the colour of the wood a little. My question is, do I have to seal this stain (the instructions on the can say use french polish from same manufacturer) or can I leave it neat? the fretboard that I have stained will not come in contact with hands or strings etc often, and while I dont want a glossy topcoat over the wood I would rather not have bits of stain rubbing off as time goes by. Has anyone used this stuff before and if so what would you do? Much appreciate any advice.
    cheers,
    thelloydr

I'd be sealing it with shellac. Couple or few coats and if you don't want the gloss cut it back with Pumice or Tripoli Powder.

    Cheers - Neil
