Knowing what a boss wants from a worker will be industry dependent... no point having a paper shuffler laying bricks, or a brickie forecasting your company's financial future!

Gee, this site has it all. I run a small business and I have spent a small fortune on improving my education, seminars, trips overseas to the US, consultants, books, etc.

To think, I joined this site because I have been a frustrated woodworker all my life and thought I may just learn something.

In fact, what I have learned, is how many talented people we have on this forum, and how they are prepared to lend a hand where they can or feel they have some experience that might be of benefit.

I have met quite a few forum members through various Woodies b b que's and get together's and I have been impressed with the quality of those people and their dedication to this hobby or business.

In fact, because of their dedication , it really comes as no surprise, that the majority, are successful in what their employment is, mainly because their attitude is right and when they have a problem to sort out they have the ability to tough it out, and work through it, when many would walk away because it is all to hard.

Ill list this the opposite way...
Things that annoy me as a foreman.
1 Dishonesty wherever possible
eg. Im sorry I stood on the glass cooktop by accident and cracked the glass top becomes I didnt notice it was broken or It was fine when I worked near it.
2 4-10 personal phone calls a day.
3 a sickie every second week when we dont have a rdo.
4 Lazy bastard syndrome... no initiative...I didnt do anything because I didnt know what you wanted and so I stood around for an hour rather than tidy up the job boxes or call you and hang up so you can call me.
5 Poor sloppy workmanship that is clearly and visibly bad with no comprehension of the fact that someone has to sign their license away at the end of the day.
6 Not asking then stuffing up or asking then doing own thing anyway.
7 Friday what would you like me to order from the wholesaler?

Monday smoko weve run out completely of of this this and this....

All I want is this:
Someone thats honest will listen to my dribble ,
Tell me to shut up when Im being a knob,
Will put the stuff they didnt use back where they got it from.
Ask me to reorder before we run out of what they've been using.
Clean up their mess, and have the decency to charge the batt drill/scissor they discharged so someone else can use it.
and to be willing to put in 6 hours a day some half decent workmanship in reasonable time.
Its not that hard but they are few and far between.

Only advice that I can think of,
Never go over your bosses head, as he is the only one who can save you if you make a mistake..always be honest to him. Do not assume that you know all the reason's for your bosses actions,

Half hour early. Every day. Pack your own lunch.
Swim all the time, a shark never sinks. Willfully and stubbornly stay busy, even if all around you are sitting.
Help whoever will have you. Pick up somebody else's slack in your spare time and don't EVER grub points for it. Statistics prove it will be noticed eventually by somebody who matters.
Don't shoot your mouth off.
Don't steal a single paperclip.
Self educate, and ask intelligent questions of those who can give good info for comparison to your knowledge.
Don't get sucked into politics of any kind, unless you're a politician or a car salesman.
Make friends with an underdog, you can use every backer.
Keep your home life at home and try not to drag any drama in to work.
Likewise, when you start the car to go home, leave all the crap at work.
