Project Plans- baby's cot
Just new to the site and back to woodwork after high school woodshop 15 years ago.
Expecting my first baby in a few months and thought of building a cot and some other furniture to match.
Has anyone got some suggestions for plans to build a baby's cot meeting safety standards etc. and any suggestions on timber suitiable for the project would be appreciated.
Cheers

Craig, there was a discussion and photos posted on this board a few month back about cots etc. Do a search of this board.
I would suggest you keep an eye out for an old cot on council's hard rubbish collection and use that cot as a plan to copy. You might even get lucky and be able to use the specialised hardware for the dropdown side.

If you are considering building a cot you would be well served to check out the australian standard on the subject.
there are specific issues cincering head entrapment and othe safety issues to be addressed.
Choice have done several reviews of commercial cotts in the past years and have found very few that comply.

Thanks for the advice. I will go and check the "Choice" website and try and get some details on standards. At this stage i'm thinking renovating a second hand cot may be more of a better idea

There are a few postings on this site regarding Cots, plans etc. Do a search and you will get a lot of info. You can also read some of the standards here Standards
I too am in the throes of making a cot for our first grandchild and I have purchased plans from the net. There a many and varied ones around. Have a look at PlansNow .
Also do a seach either on here or on Google for plans and you'll be surprised what you find.
I haven't started mine as yet as I am awaiting delivery of my new table saw and when that comes will be getting stuck into it.Regards,

Thanks BigPete,
I have seen the PlansNow site, i was just a bit unsure of ordering plans form a site in the USA, different standards, measurements and the like. Having heard of someone else using them, i may investigate further.
What are you using for the drop side hardware?? i havn't been able to find much regarding whats available and where.

I haven't obtained the crib parts as yet as am still contemplating which way to go - I maybe even do them the same way as Ray Jones (Zathras) has done for his drop sides in the Baby Cot Hardware Thread. Still undecided as yet.
There are a few places you can get them from - Carbatec is one, this place in the States also sells heaps of cot stuff Cot Parts and is supposedly "the best ' supplier of cot parts.
Also thru Ray Sanders (a member of this site) at Beenatree Crafts as they have cot parts too - Go to their site and send an email to Ray and you can get all the info you need.
Hope this has been of some help to you.Regards,

Thanks BigPete. Your info has been a great help. I have spent hours searching for a site just like the one you pointed out in the USA. I have emailed both your recommendations and i am now just waiting for there replies to help me move on to the planning stage.
Once again thanks for the info
Cheers
PS i went to Carba Tec here in Sydney and they didn't stock any sort of cot hardware, just tools for woodworking. Maybe its a different company. Not sure??

I helped a friend make a cot for his (their) first grandchild a while ago. The most useful bit of advise I can give is buy the cot mattress first, then make the cot to fit!
It saves lots of heartache after the event!Dragonfly
No-one suspects the dragonfly!
