1st Question in this learning curve

Hi with ormantal turning do you sand first or after but then you will turn out the pattern. What suggestion what would you do?

Sand to a final finish as you are unable to do so afterwards.
You may have some feathering to clean up but that is all.

You'll find that you need to be pretty picky about what woods you use for ornamental turning.

Ideally you want a strong wood with a nice, fine, straight grain. Coarse grained and figured woods tend to cut "raggedly" and, as you're finding out, you can't sand afterwards. (Well... you can, but it's fiddly and the results never look as crisp.)

As examples, Huon Pine cuts really well but River Redgum is a waste of time.

Hi Toni.
You can not sand afterwards as you will ruin your pattern work. Sand to the best finish you can before pattern work commences.
Cut the bristles down very short on a one inch paint brush.
Rub the bristles across the finished pattern and this will help remove the fine fibres that make be left especially on softer woods. You can also do this with the machine running if you like and this will help burnish the work without causing damage to the patterns.
