New speaker project

These are the Peerless based MTM floorstanders Ive finished for the lounge.
The drivers are 61/2" Peerless (HDS range) and Peerless 1" tweeters. Not the dearest but the best I could get for the money <$1000. The xovers were designed by a bloke called Jay from the US. The enclosures are 18mm mdf and have Marri baffles supported by mdf.
Details below.
They sound very nice. good mid-range and bass reproduction. Im not going to put a sub with them as Im not a big fan of the gut sensation a sub gives.

Very nice. Don't sweat the subwoofer, since, if those speakers have been correctly designed (and I do not doubt that they have been), they should operate to below 30Hz. A sub can only hope to provide a little augmentation down to 20Hz.

I did respond, however, in order to correct a common misconception about subwoofers. When operating correctly, with music, as opposed to cinema, a sub should be barely (if at all) perceptible. If the sub is obvious, then there is either something wrong with the sub, or it has been adjusted by an idiot.

Thanks Zaphod, yes I do believe that subs can be made to ' dissappear' however most if not all ' cast' their voices beyond the listening environment and I find that intensely annoying.
By the way, are you THE Zaphod Beeblebrox; who is to be found on a certain popular and most excellent HiFi site?

Nice job, Mr Fiat. I've been looking at JayWJ's and Zaph's (from Zaphaudio.com) waveguide TMM. I think I'll go with the latter.

I started with a self-designed two way with lower end Peerless woofer (831916) and a Vifa tweeter (D26TG) just to see how good they could be - and was pleasantly surprised. So now I'm prepared to spend some money on some better drivers (in this case, SEAS).

Jay certainly seems to know his stuff (I spend a fair bit of time on diyaudio)

Thanks Stuey63. Im not completely finished with them yet. Jay sent instructions on "voicing" them to balance the highs and lows and after listening to them for a few weeks Im ready to do a little tweeking.
Also the bases are on now Ill post another pic. Iv put a frame of marri under the base of the speaker box to balance the wood at the top.
Il put spikes on too when I get time.

I'm with harry on the white, however as long as they sound ok....
Was toying with the idea of using these drivers myself, very reasonably
priced for what you get.

Subs are essential unless you have massive woofers. It's amazing how full the sound is with a sub. My original sub was made with the 'Peerless' 10inch and when you watch things like the jets taking off in TopGun or canon fire in Pirates of the Carribean the low hertz stuff fills the room.

I tuned mine to go down to about 17Hz and it casued a few problems. You can feel the base and not hear it, apart from the step risers near the port vibrating. The really low end stuff goes right through you and you can feel it even if you cant here it.

All said. I have now minimised all speakers and just have a logitech computer THX certified system in the lounge. Bigger might be better at really high volume, but even with this system I can't even use a third of the volume and for less than $300 on special its a bargain.

Don't underestimate little speakers, if the system is well balanced with a sub.

That said theres a THX sound check on some of Speilbergs DVD's, use it to to help setup the crossover so you dont get an abnormal kickin.
