Hi Gordon, was "talking stick" a typo?
or do you mean those staffs/sticks that make noise when you invert them?
I remember them being made and sold around here years ago, they were called rainsticks I think.
one of my old hippie mates up in the hills would probably remember how to make them (or maybe not )
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

No it was not a typo...Talking sticks are like staffs or totems that have carvings in them.. they were/are used in tribal cultures ...My idea was to get some symbolic masculine carvings for on a stick as a present with a difference for my 18 year old Son so your hippie mate might be the go..Do you hace a contact detail for him
Thanks

Are you sure you have a proper understanding of what a "talking stick" is? I think I know what you're talking about, but it's not what I know a talking stick as.
This is my understanding of a "talking stick". http://healing.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ/Ya&sdn=healing&cdn=religion&tm=3&f=10&tt=14&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.acaciart.com/stories/archive6.html
You don't want a stick that indicates who can talk though, nor that makes noise do you?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you want a stick/staff that "talks" through the symbols and creatures carved into it. Tells a story of the person who holds it. Yes?
Somewhere back in the foggy corner or my memory I seem to recall these, but they aren't what I know as talking sticks, though they do talk in a manner. Perhaps you and I have differing tribes, I notice you're at near the coastline (if you're from the US WA), near where the Puget Sound tribe was, which was more into totem poles and symbolism, perhaps their "talking sticks" were different from where I'm at.
If you're not from the US WA then ignore what I've just said because I don't know your tribes over there at all. (^:Wood. Such a wonderful substance.

It was used as courtesy not to interrupt a chief when he was speaking. The talking stick was then passed to the next council member who wished to speak. The stick was a ceremonial item and was decorated with eagle feathers and crystals to show its significance.
Some tribes used a talking feather instead of a stick, while others used a peace pipe, a wampum belt, a sacred shell or other object by which the tribe designated the right to speak.
Nowadays it is used still by many groups, especially in groups of children or adults who need help preventing discussions from degenerating into cacophonies. It can make sure that people listen to what is being said and can help keep an interesting discussion focussed. In particular, it is used in talking circles.
A similar concept is that of the 'conch' in the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The only person allowed to talk during meetings is the one holding the conch.Pat
