Yes, a shame, but Tom (Musicman) does disclose this in his description. It will undoubtedly devalue the saw, but I think will still sell well.
Incidentally, I have bought several saws from him and have found him to be one of the best and most honest on Ebay. To give an idea, I realised from one of his listings, which I purchased, that he had a 1910 Simonds catalogue. I asked him if I could purchase some photocopies of the relevant pages.
He sent them on to me free of charge.
On another occasion a buyer contacted him asking to contact me. He did not disclose my details, although the buyer subsequently did make contact with me by other means and we regularly converse about (you've guessed it) saws.
There is another Panther saw around too, but this one is completely missing the medallion and the rats have chewed the top horn.

This is in fact the third time I have seen this same saw listed and he attracted no bids when it was first listed at $799. For Australian buyers there are also another couple of catches. You can add at least 25% for currency conversion and if you paid the BIN price, more than $200 in import duties too.
You would have to be keen. I'll stick to my cheapies (relatively) I think.

Paul
I haven't been able to access the Forums for over a week (and I think there may still be a problem with loading pictures as I couldn't do that just now.)
Who is Marv?
Tom's panther saw still sold for A$785 despite having a "wrong" medallion.
I think this saw from Musicman will sell very well too: One of ole Henry's very first efforts when he still worked out of his garage (well, not exactly, but I expect you will get the drift.) No real apologies required from this one dating from the mid forties (19th century forties that is ) This saw could conceivably be 170 years old so in very good nick with nib in place and handle compete.

Marv has contributed on here a bit, but his natural home is in the US.
He has a *lot* of experience with handsaws ... and done some high quality restorations.
I hope he won't mind me copying a couple pics to give the flavour.
There's a forum here that he set up (as I understand it) ... http://woodworkerszone.com/igits/forumdisplay.php?f=63
(Toby put me on to it, but I've been there less than here)
And before and after ... even 'though the focus is a bit out ...

Thanks for the clarification Paul.
The rosewood/mahogany colouring I think enhances the look and I really like the wheat carving, although I know that is not to everybody's taste.

the price seems a bit steep for an unknown maker.
also the mouths seem wide for a mitre plane -- and the variable width of the mouths suggests they may not be much use as usersregards from Alberta, Canada

That's a rough bunch of planes!! Lots of broken frogs and broken wood. (obviously a dealer isn't going to give up unused sweethearts for $20)
Imagine that the weight of those forty is probably in the range of 250-300 pounds.
There's a guy near me who has a booth, every plane is $20, except 8s are $50 and smaller planes are sometimes less. Bedrocks are a couple of bucks more. I went in one day and there were four good #7s for $20 each. One of them was a top shape edwin hahn jointer, $20. I thought while I was there that if I took those planes and flipped them, then I'd contribute to the same thing I don't like a whole lot, and that is the upward spiral in price because every reasonable priced tool ends up on ebay and it gets there via dealer - thus beginners are left spending big cash.
Went back the next day because I changed my mind and figured *i'd* keep the edwin hahn plane and pass the other 3 7s along to beginners for $20 each. They were gone, every single plane. The guy who had the booth there was dropping more stuff off, and said "I guess my prices are too low, usually dealers just come in and clean out my booth and resell the stuff".
Not many deals left for users these days!

I wonder how you attach the depth stop to this superb plane?
