My first posting on the woodwork forum.
I think your design is great, a nice clean look. I will probably use some of your ideas in the hall table that I am in the process of designing. Thanks for your thread.
Cheers, Guy.

FINISHED
Finished all but for handles on the drawers I might even leave them off as the drawers can easily be opened using the lower edge. This first pic was taken using a flash although it shows up the finish well (note the can of lubricating wax reflection) it dosen't represent the true colours of the table.
Taken with no flash this pic does represent the colours well. The finish was two coats of cellulose sanding sealer knocked back with 0000 grade wire wool then two coats of danish oil each one knocked back again with wire wool, a third and final coat of danish oil as shown in the pic. A final touch will be a coat of Black Bison Paste wax in a day or two.
The Final Pic.
Many thanks for all the critique I hope you enjoyed the journey of this WIP

wow
possibly the best hall table i have come across yet.
I would be very nervous to use it let alone put handles on it after getting it to its finished state there.
Post pics with the handles pls, if you do decide to put some on...

I agree with Snikas, I'd leave the handles off, Lord you wrote you're hesitant about it and being your gut instinct I'd go with that.
What a rippa of a hall table.

great!
Just beautiful!
Well done. I love it.Don't pass them by! Be daring and caring!
Dampen their misery....sit with them and talk a little.
Buy them something to eat and a tram fare to a local mission.
I'm so lucky that I've somewhere to live and have family support.

Thanks for all the praise
Here's a pic of it in the house, you'll have to imagine it with the wooden wall behind plastered and painted because the wood has got to come off.

Absolutely one of the finest hall tables I've seen. That is destined to be a family heirloom and is built to last hundreds of years. You just can't beat black walnut as a timber and you have done great justice to it. I love your choice of finish. I like it without handles just fine, but if you were so inclined to put handles on it, may I suggest turned black walnut dowels through ebony blocks.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Many thanks for all the kind compliments
I've decided not to fit any handles as the drawers are easy to open anyway, so thanks again for all the suggestions and ideas.
