Mineral Oil Danger
With WIP on my butchers cutting table, I was going to oil it with mineral oil. One of those Current Affair shows on TV the did a report on mineral oil as used in baby oils being a danger to life.
Not sure what to use now.

Hi Les,
At the Community woodworking shed we use walnut oil on cutting boards & butchers blocks. Its food safe & doesn't go rancid.

I've just learned that there are two types of walnut oil. Both are safe for food preparation surfaces.
Grocery store type - Intended to be used for salads and may not cure
Woodworking store type - With drying chemicals added, cures in a reasonable amount of time and completely safe after curing.

I have used Macadamia just the one out of the food stores dried hard with buffing had great smell.
I saw the thing on TV also the kid drank the stuff it got into the lungs and could not be removed.
Makes you wonder about Margarine doesn't it.

There are oils and there are oils. The one you 'should' use on food surfaces is 'White Oil, B.P.' where 'B.P.' is British Pharmacopeia (sp?) - not British Petroleum. There are other 'white oil' products but if they are not medical grade they can have all sorts for crud in them & still be 'legally' white oil.
I suspect the media beat-up, if containing any resemblance to the truth, refers to some products that have a variety of 'white' or clear oils in them from dubious sources. For instance 'Neats Foot' oil could be called a 'white oil' but it is (was?) made from rendered cow's feet & not something I'd eat or drink - think BSE/ Mad Cow.
Anyhow, medical grade 'White Oil' should be available from your local chemist if he still makes up lotions & potions rather than being a box pusher. I know you can get it in 20 litre drums, but I don't know where my mate gets his from & 20 litres is just a bit much for one chopping board. If you drink a lot of it, it will just give you a good clean out, which is one reason it is in the pharmacy.
Maybe another line for Neil to add to UBeaut? It should be OK with Oz Post at least.

Only thing that you have to worry about Mineral Oil is drinking too much and spending the next day on the Head. I use a mixture of mineral oil and Paraffin for cutting boards.
A friend take a dose nightly to combat that "Stuffy Feeling and failure to perform" if you know what I mean. One night we were camped and passing the bottle a bit too much , My friend took his nightly dose before retiring, another fellow thought it was some sort of beverage and continued to drink the contents of the bottle. Next morning he didn't go fishing with us as he had to stay close to the Head Was a cleaned out fellow when we returned. That is the worse example of mineral oil. Now Baby Oil which is Mineral Oil with a Scent added may be a different thing, as the added scent may create a ingestion problem. But plain Mineral oil will only make for a greased Colon a best.

Ok my 2cents worth.
I don't think we should bag mineral oil because of what some current affair show says.
(I should stop here......because I think current affairs programs just put out crud to attract interest)
However, had the child ingested water/wine/walnut oil into his lungs, the results would probably have been similar.
So, do we not use water/wine/walnut oil ever again??
Mineral oil has been proven to be a safe finish, but taking it into your lungs may be pushing the safety aspect just a tad.Last edited by watson; 26th September 2008 at 09:50 PM. Reason: addition

As a young'n I suffered from terrible earaches so my mum used to heat cod liver oil in a teaspoon and pour into the affected ear then she'd light up a Rothman's and blow the smoke in onto the CLOil. It never failed to ease the pain but I think it was more to do with the anaesthetic properties of nicotine than the oil. Anyway it must have worked cos I'm deaf as a post.. WHAT DID YOU SAY???

Once a month we would bebop down the stairs an into the kitchen for breakfast. Yikes! there is fresh squeezed Orange Juice. OH NO!!! not the Caster OIL. ECCH! Take a slug and wash it down with Fresh Orange juice. OKAY ready to meet the world and all its problem based on centurys old remedy how terible it tastes.
Almost as bad as eating Vicks Sauve and sugar balls to relieve congested chest. Old remedies would kill todays kids....

Theres also a debate about whether this is safe for
people with nut allergies.
The trouble with today's youth is we are far more hygenic
than when i was a kid, i never knew anyone with asthma
when i was young, these day's every second schoolkid
has it. I blame central heating for it, no reason, i just
dislike central heating for some reason.
