    Default Planter Box - Blackbutt

It has been nice warm spring weather lately.

Most of the garden has the perennials so flowering annuals and herbs have been in pots. If I forget to water them they die.

So I decided to use more of the reject Blackbutt and make a larger pot. A planter box.

All the 130x 19mm boards were cut to length.
Nothing fancy - I screwed all the joints together and screwed half inch ply to the frame.
The base has three loose boards that I covered with spare pavers. This should give plenty of drainage.

Since it will be outside and be filled with wet soil, I gave it three heavy coats of an outdoor oil.
As you can see in the pics - so far it repels water.

After filling it with potting mix and giving it a good water I sprinkled a packet of summer seed mix.

This should give me a little more grace with watering.
I might make a second one.

    Thanks for a comment HS.

It doesn't look much but I think it will be handy.

I sprinkled a couple of packets of seeds in it and plenty have germinated.
There should be some colour by Christmas.

Yes. Does look good. I trust that it did not cost too much for the wood.

I like the box - I think the simplicity of the ply panels will allow the plants to take centre stage.

A gardening tip for you - if you tend to forget to water then add some peat moss - not the real peat stuff, but the stuff made from coconut fibre. You can buy a brick-sized block for about $5 from garden centres. You break a bit off, soak it in water and then mix it with the potting mix. Every time you water or it rains, it'll hold the water for a bit longer without drowning the roots.
    Cheers, Richard

    Default Flowering box

    The plants are growing.

    First flower on the weekend.

The little back yard barbie area is looking pretty cosy now.
A good spot for a birthday party.

    Cheers

That looks great, Scally. Thanks for the pics.

Would you tell us the rough dimensions, please? Hope I have not missed them.

We are off the farm now and living with a son. I am having water problems similar to yours with the small pots, so am thinking, or threatening!

Looking good. I must make a couple of those for the missus and get me up some (quick expiry) brownie points.

    No problem Oldfarmer.

    Rough dimensions are

    1500 long x 500 high x 400 wide.

The dimensions were based on the size boards I had so you can make it any size that suits.

You get brownie points and less water dramas. The pot plants are still wilting but those in the planter box hang on much longer.

    It was simple to make.
The slowest part was waiting for the finish to dry.
