Fastener Corrosion LOSP

I recently had a a new fence installed using LOSP treated pine.
I understand that the paling were fastened with a nail gun using zinc plated nails when assembled in the factory.

Due to splitting of the timbers it was necessary to remove several palings.
I was somewhat surprised to find that the nails exhibited rusting.

I am still trying to obtain information from CHH NZ in respect to the recommended nail type suitable for this material.

Does any one have any information

I would have thought that a gal nail would have been applicable for external use.

the nails look like t or c type brads which if i remember correctly are not guaranteed by any of the manufacturers to not rust

They are T-nails and are a bad choice for this situation as you've discovered. I've put some earlier threads in below. The building code Australia bans t-nails for several applications, but I don't know about a factory-made fence. Might be worth chasing up with your building authority or someone here may know.

There is also a BIG difference between 'zinc plated' and 'galvanised' - zinc plating seems to be just to stop them rusting in the box - they rust if you touch them with bare hands. Galvanised on the other hand are more expensive & always seem to have a rough finish - there also seems to be two standards for nuts & bolts too - galvanised have a coarser thread with a bit more play in the thread, but they don't rust readily.

You may have to hunt around to find 'real' galvanised nails, but Galvanised, stainless or 'plastic' coated are what you need for 'treated' softwood.

It looks like I am at the mercy of the supplier who now advises the nails are electro gal and that there has been no problems with longevity.

The rusting has not been explained.

'electro gal' is a term used by Paslode - I'd drop them an email and see if they are supposed to be long term corrosion proof, or if it's just a coating to stop them rusting in the box. (I suspect the latter)

got a BOX OF PASLODE C-32MM GALV.BRADS in front of me box clearly states product is not guaranteed against corrosion
