Tomorrow I'll be in possession of a AL-50GB Lathe from Hare & Forbes...and a very empty wallet.

    Hi Funky

    Lucky bugger!

I don't know a lot about lathes and have seriously toyed with the idea of getting one to play with, especially with my interest and current build of a CNC router. It would be invaluable for machining parts for that, along with many other uses I can think of.

I'm assuming you did quite a bit of research prior to deciding on this particular lathe. Is there anything in particular which made you go for this one?

It's in about the right price range for me, so I'm very interested in your comments and would like, if you don't mind, to perhaps gain some benefit from your research and, no doubt superior knowledge.

    Cheers
    Geoff

So FC, now you can make all your own machines & tools.

Start with CNC and see where that takes you.

Okay I lied, I bought the AL-54B. I had a good look at both lathes and decided that the AL-50GB was more in my price range. So I was in line ready to buy it and an old model maker got talking to my dad and then me and he "convinced" (I was a push over) me to buy the bigger model.

I also bought a set of 9 turning tools, a set of 3 micrometers and a knurling tool that's to big
