    Default Small start

Pretty much first attempt at carving forms/ human or otherwise, now I need more time for practice. Very adictive but a lot of fun. Timber is Liquid Amber, she is suposed to be laying on her side half imersed in water. She looks slightly beter in person than the photo (slightly)

I used a power woodcarver just for the first 1/2" or so then muscle from there on, bit rough on my delicate little hands

    That looks great!
I love the way hair sort of flows back into the timber.

Gutsy effort Craw well done and importantly you've enjoyed the experience. I think it interesting that people find an affinity with the female form and wood.

    Huon is definitely female

Thanks Springwater, time just vanished, as I'm sure you know, just one more nick here and here and one more here and..................... I'm sure I will get more into it and think or feel like sculpting other forms but the female form seamed like the best place to start. Sculpting and carving is not like "woodwork" where you can just go and make something and your particular mood doesn't have a huge imapct on the work, it is more like painting (which I do now and then when I have time) and other art forms where your mood and state of mind play a much greater part in the feel of your work. So when the mood stikes I will carve something else but for now I will stick with the female form, I know the shape it should be easy ha ha

Well done Claw Hama, do you intent to feature carving on your furniture in the future?

Or do you do that already?

    Cheers

Hi Steve, I have done small amounts of carving on furniture in the past but not sculpture. It was only ever flowers and paterns etc and the carved photo tree. This is taking it to the next level and a hole lot more fun. Can't wait to do the next one.

hey claw, just spotted this post
really great start, nice pose, well done,
    expect to see more soon
remember, the figure is the single most expressive image available to an artist.

what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

Thanks Undie, very keen to do some more. You have been a great inspiration which has pushed me to have a go. Would be doing some more this weekend only I am making myself a timber tool box, nothing worse than when you go to someones house or buisness to do woodwork and you rock up with a metal or plastic tool box.

First time for this type of sculpture Clare, usually just been a little carving of flowers and paterns etc. So many things to do so little time to do them all. I realy enjoyed this though, so will do more very soon.
