hi Grunter53 just had a look at chris pyes website
and this is the set that chris says is a good starting kit
This is the PFEIL BASIC TOOL SET:
- Cut 2 x 5mm - flat gouge
- Cut 2 x 12mm
- Cut 2 x 20mm
- Cut 7 x 6mm - medium gouge
- Cut 7 x 14mm
- Cut 7 x 20mm
- Cut 9 x 5mm - deep gouge
- Cut 9 x 13mm
- Cut 9 x 20mm
- Cut 1S x 8mm - skew chisel
- Cut 12 x 8mm - 60° V tool

Sorry to take so long to reply. Had visitors over the long weekend.
Thanks for the Chris Pye list. I had looked at his recommendations plus a few others in some books I have bought plus library books. The advice is the same as yours, start simple and see how it progresses.
I have purchased some second hand Marples and a couple of Addis carving chisels.
I was wondering if your offer of Pfeil chisels at a 20% discount was still available for individual chisels. Also does it encompas carving knives and stones. How do you order, calculate postage and make payment?
