Pencils?
My wife wants me to make a pencil for one of our boys who is an Aquatic Wildlife Biologist and spends a great amount of time in the mountains doing his work.
Now I know there are pencil kits and am looking for recommendations with the only requirement is that it use .05mm lead and be reliable.
Any help here on suggestions would be appreciated.

One of my favourite pencils is the Perfect Fit (Berea-Bear Tooth Woods), takes a Parker biro, gel or Schmidt 0.5 mm (not 0.05mm!) lead or 07mm lead.
So, you can either make a matching pair or when you don't want a pencil change to a Parker refill., reasonably priced too and they feel good in the hand. Quite a range of platings as well.

I have to assume a ready supply of .05 mm leads as would not be my first choice in a pencil, a bit too fragile for me hehe.drop the pencil once and its likely the lead will break into many pieces, very frustrating . I believe the schmidt pencils are amongs the best movements . you can get almost any kit you choose in pencil so then it comes to price and personal liking. You also have choices of click type or twist again personal taste. I don't seem to be able to sell many pencils in any form, but my preference is the power pencil with 2 mm leads has a matching pen kit ,and they do sell as a pair ok in a nice wooden case. The pencils also come with a tube of refills so should be good for a few years penciling hehe. I know this is not really answering your question ,but as you can see its almost like "how long is a piece of string" so many choices and options! cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Don't know what thickness the leads are but I like the Sierra pencils from Addictive... good for pairs too
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

I was also going to mention the Sierra pencil - but I can't comment on the longevity - the pencil felt good in the hand, nice weight etc as with the sierra - only negative is that it uses less wood then the sierra, so hard to do a matched pair

I've made the Perfect Fit and Sierra pencils and they are both a nice quality unit. Another good option is the Cigar, which also comes as a pencil and in either 0.5 or 0.7 lead.

Hi from NZ. I have found the Power Pencil to be a hot seller. For your outdoors person the 2mm lead will have endurance. I have made them for a worldwide group of pencil buffs who have ctitiqued them. The Power pencil stood up to scrutiny. One big comment was that it had the strongest clutch grip seen on any pencil. I have sold others like the Sierra and Executive but their .7mm leads are fragile. The Power is by far my best seller. Denis

The Sierra is a 0.7mm you could look at the slimline pencils I'm pretty sure they are 0.5 and you coulsd make the matching kit , I think if you stick with Dayacom or Berea kits you won't be disappointed . not that I dont like the Rhizengs , I just find there quality a bit hit and miss and if your after dependability you might want to factor that into your choiceCheers

I appreciate all the suggestions.
My son just returned from spending 10 days out hiking around Glacier National Park with his summer crew doing surveys of toads and responded to my query.
"I like, quote, 'click' and .05mm lead", unquote, said the short spoken cur
Thanks ... now at least I have something to go on before his B-Day and get the lovely Mrs off my backside ...
Thanks guys ...
I notice that the Long Click Pen also come in a pencil but with .07mm lead. Anyone happen to know if the Schmidt pencil cartridge will fit this one?Last edited by rhossack; 4th July 2009 at 02:45 PM. Reason: update
