I'll never complain about paying $80 for a Japanese chisel again

Awesome craftsmanship! Imagine being able to use your feet like that! I wish!
And no safety glasses getting in the way either! Occ. health and safety not a priority I guess.

Now we know how it's done! Makes the mass produced item look a bit sick and I guess it's true that we get what we pay for.

Great Vid.
I too noticed and loved the no-safety-glasses-approach:D

bloody cool wet wheel grinder too.

I would love to see more videos of Japanese hand tool making- hopefully this can be the thread.
A while ago while following links through and beyond ebay, I came across a few videos of the making of japanese saws. It was fascinating- the techniques of hammering alone- and then even moreso the hand-planing of the steel down to near paper thin:oo: even through the low quality video the sound of screeching hand planed steel made my teeth hurt.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find it again.
So keep em coming if anyone has anymore.

There are some video clips of saw making included with the Mitsukawa saws listed by this eBay seller....but, I think you need a fastish Internet connection to see them clearly.

Charlie - the video worked for me, even on my Mac.

FYI: For those that didn't recognize him, the blacksmith shown in the chiselmaking video is Tasai-san (the father, Akio). So's website has more information about the Tasai family and photos of quite a few of their chisels. Very tasty.

Not quite on the topic of Japanese tool making videos, but of possible interest here, I have posted a link to a video clip of a Japanese woodturner in action in another forum. It's intersting how the Japanese also turn on the 'pull', in keeping with their saws and planes.

Just the first couple of minutes of that video is relevant to this forum. Here is the cross-link (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showpost.php?p=589286&postcount=4) to that posting.
