I see Carbartec no longer stocks the Hamlet 2060 range and worse I missed the sale. They ran the 2060's out cheap so a buddy of mine tells me. :C

Lucky me then:D I picked up a 2060 bowl gouge from the bargain table at Carbatec Clayton. Normally around the $160.00 mark. I got it for $107.00:2tsup:

Cheers

In Sydney the bowl gouge was marked down to $157.00, I left it there.

The bargains in Sydney weren't.

Hi All,
Must be some gouge. $157. So what size is a 2060, & is it handled.
What would be wrong with a P&N or McJing HSS one. Maybe they are dearer ??.
Regards,
issatree.

Dont think McJings can compare, not by a long chalk. P&N come close, but not real close.
P&N and McJings are cheaper, especially McJings also they dont hold an edge that well by comparision.

Apparently slow sales, so out they went. :C

The 2060 range had cobalt added to the HSS that meant it held its edge 4 to 5 time longer than their M2 (standard) range. It was marketed as their "Professional Range".

Nice tools but hard to justify.

I was tempted to buy a HD 1-1/4 scraper, but at $180 I managed to resist. Mind you , I did go back twice (but still managed to resist).

I've got two of the Hamlet ASP 2060 (or it is 2030) chisels - a 12mm bowl gouge and a 25mm skew.

They are probably wasted on me.

But I can say that the bowl gouge stands up to redgum a stack better than my other Hamlets. Once I learn to sharpen it properly on the Tormek with the new jig setter, I won't be wasting as much steel..... (I've pretty much put it aside for a while, as I don't want to waste that grade of steel before I learn to turn a little better).

I also have a larger Kryo gouge which is apparently of similar quality. A different hardening process too I gather.

Were the tools worth the extra $? Sorry, but I can't tell just yet.

(I will confess, I sharpened the 12mm gouge after set me up on the Tormek and I cut myself badly in "testing" for sharpness. I hope my mate down at Tooradin isn't reading this! He didn't notice the band-aids last visit. ):D

A simple alternative: http://www.thompsonlathetools.com/

10% vanadium content is good for abrasion resistance and cuts cleaner than M2; these puppies are also cryo treated.

Maybe a few of the tool hungry could share postage costs.

He also sells 3/8" rod 'blanks' for the DIYers - make your own round skew, Oland tool, shear scraper or 3 point tool. One I got last year was IIRC USD 20.

Well I'd be happy to organise a bulk buy/ship if more are interested. Min of 5 tools in total.

Payment would have to be made in advance I'm afraid and orders taken only for items in stock.

Let me know and I'll start another thread.

What would the ballpark figure in price for one of these landed here be Ern?

I'll ask the pros over the next week or so if I have any notable gaps in my tool collection and will get back to you Ern.

Surely I must be getting close to a full kit of gears.....

Thanks Ern

Will mediate on this and let you know shortly.

Also when he quotes 5/8", do you know is this the diameter of the rod or the flute?

US measurements are of the rod DJ.
