View Full Version : Question about Mango and bowls

I have two small burls from the mango tree that I want to make natural edge bowls from.

I've heard that mango is pretty stable, but I thought I'd check with you first. Should I leave the sides thick and then return at a later date, or would I be ok to do them thin even if it's green?

I don't care if it moves - in fact I'd LOVE it if it moved. But I don't want them to crack. Anyway to turn thin now, and insure that it didn't crack?

Thanks

For green nat edge you can turn 'em in one go. Often you can get them thinner this way and get more of an oval effect when they dry.

Even if you just step out for a cuppa wrap the wood in a plakky bag.

Finishing may have to be done differently though as the wood is damp. I wouldn't recommend you use the hair dryer technique as that accelerates the warping at a time when you don't want it. You could try a shellac sealer and then wax over the top. I use nitrocellulose sanding sealer myself.
