Eliza's cedar box (2)

Cedar? Cypruss? It's something begining with C.

Another little plain one. This one had a few problems, not the least of which are the cracks in the lid. That will teach me to round a piece of wood then leave it out in the cold over night. It was such a tiny piece to begin with I couldn't get beneith them.

It's 2.5cm high (lid is 1cm) and just under 5cm across.

Not many photos because it was getting dark as I was taking them. I forgot to take a photo to show how the grain lines up (it does, honest!) I'll take more of it tomorrow, maybe.

Didn't u state in the guidelines for this comp that WIP type pics should be posted of the project? I've been very keen to see the progress of these boxes as i'm yet to tackle 1 myself.

I don't think it was a rule, hope not. I ususally think to take a photo at the begining, and then forget because I'm caught up in the cutting.

For example, I took this - and then took the ones at the end! lol

So you pare the top section off on the lathe, i had been thinking that you'd take it to the bandsaw or something. I guess this way u can be sure the top is removed square to the base.

Rattrap, have a look at my "Beginners challenge" thread. there is some WIP stuff on there that might help.

Cutting round things with the curve against the table on a bandsaw is dangerous - you probably know that already but, just in case..

And I don't have a bandsaw - Beven is kind enough to cut timber up for me.

I have a scroll saw, but the boxes wouldn't fit anyway :)

LOL i sure do know, i have some nasty cuts in my left hand that have just about healed from just that kind of stupidity. note to self, when u get the feeling that something probably isn't a good idea, DON'T DO IT cuse it probably isn't.:doh::doh::doh:
Seriously tho i had been thinking that you'd cut off the cap section while the piece of timber was still squareish, before it goes onto the lathe.
Thanks for that heads up on the beginners challenge thread, just had a read thru. I think a mate at the community shed where i do my woodturning has that Richard raffan dvd on turnign boxes. Might have to borrow it for a week.
