I have been able to pick up some wood that were originally part of a display cabinet. The pieces that I have were part of the legs. I do not know what type of wood this is.

There is a very high chance that this was constructed in Italy but assembled in Australia. The pieces that I have are all straight in grain, with both sizes 500mm and 1100mm ish. The first photo is just after it was thickness and the second one is with me adding some water to bring out some figure.

perhaps some kind of cherry??

With origins in Italy it's likely to be an European Hardwood, The grain looks a little like Sycamore to me. You'd probably know it by it's cousins the Maple family of trees.

Yes, I would have suggested an Acer spp. from the side-grain view, too, but the end-grain doesn't look at all right (too porous). However, the pic isn't close enough to see detail, so no bets either way......
