View Full Version : Brazillian Lathes

Been looking around over here for a lathe but with little success. Those that I have seen are very crude and only one speed. Nobody understands what a chuck is so their availability is ziltch

Looking at making one as motors and other parts are cheap enough. My main problems are likely to be a hollow headstock and tailstock spindle, and the morse taper.May be able to find a machinist to do them for me.

Woodturninjg is not a big thing in these parts, so I may have the field to myself.

What do people think is the most suitable spindle thread size? I haven´t decided how to get a chuck yet, let alone select a brand!!!!

You're in Brazil? What an adventure. No suggestions though. I know nothing.:D

Preferred thread might be 1-1/4"-8. Building a bowl lathe with solid spindle would be fairly easy, but finding a hollow spindle with MT2 may be a challenge. Would be good if you could acquire a 3 phase motor and electronic variable speed controller/converter.

If going to be turning bowls, vase and hollow vessels etc then you would not need a hollow spindle. This makes it much easier to manufacture.Chucks, ship it in from Oz or the USA, along with your chisels etc.

Consider using box section of RHS, SHS etc for the headstock

Hey Arthur, you should have taken the JET with you. Guess you could always use a drill press.:)

Hughie, I followed your lathe making efforts with interest and re visited them over the last couple of days for ideas. Had thought of three phase with VS ( Inverter) but house only has single phase. Thanks for the help.

Had actually thought of bringing the Jet over but it wouldn´t fit in the hand luggae.:D
Had to get the priorities right as we will be here for 12 months or so (actually have permanent residency here). I brought some tools, some centres and a Jacobs chuck along with some pen kits and blanks.

No Ed, not deported. My lovely wife is Brazillian, so after 22 ( almost 23 ) years in Oz I thought it was only fair to give up some of my time to come here, especially since her mother is bed ridden and the younger sister could do with a break.

Haircut Grumpy:?:?, or did you mean a Brazillian wax???:D:D:p

Gues the first thing I will need to do is make a solid work bench and go from there. One thing - timber here is cheap by Australian standards so getting decent stuphph won´t be a problem.

Will endeavour to post pics as things get rolling.

Maybe you could get one of their crude basic ones and put extra bits on it? Like speed changing thingies. :D

You need to research this topic a bit more, most inverters will run 3ph on single phase supply

In fact, you can't get variable speed from a single phase motor, as they rely on (ie need) the condenser to work. Believe me, I have looked into this..

Yep, checked this out too. Interesting to see that Calm´s motor is a Weg. These are mad in Brasil and the agency in Campos ( where we are staying) is directly across the river from us. Spoke to them yesterday and the lady is going to get in touch with me regarding prices, availability etc.

That´s only half of what things can be like here Ray.

I intend to put some entries in the !Nothing to do with Wood" section about life here.
