View Full Version : Taking a punt

Recently, whilst in Broken Hill, I swapped some wood with
Bruce ("Bellyup") One piece he gave me was "Punty Wood".

It had a distinct knot in the middle which fell apart during
turning but left me with a lovely knot hole.

I could have made the lidded box about 5mm shorter but
desperately wanted to retain all of the knot hole.

A am very pleased with the result, and particularly the finial
as one of my previous efforts apparently resembled a hose
fitting.

Open for comments.

I like it you have done a nice job:2tsup:

I think you made the correct decision in keeping the knot as 1.
Did you fill the knot or have you left it natural texture?

Did not fill the knot ... it is au naturale.

Nicely done Allen :2tsup:

"Punty" wood sounds like something GJ's favorite team, Collingwood, might be kicking around

Nice one Allan.:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

I would be very confident in saying that that is some type of acacia.Lots of Mulga out that way, used to use it for firewood!:doh:

Very purty Allan:2tsup::2tsup: Great peice of wood to start with.:2tsup:

Did you roll the beads or do them in a scraper mode??

KenW and Jefferson will tell you the finial needs to be thinner but hey Jeff could do with that himself. I rekon its a bonza job mate.:2tsup::2tsup: Better than i could have done.

Cheers

G'day Allan,
Wow, great job and looks good. What finish did you use?
I'll bet you had fun hollowing out !!!
Punty Bush looks very much like Mulga except that it is more shrub-like than Mulga, has a rougher bark and weights a ton - oh, did I mention hard- very ,very hard but boy does it polish up well!
Well done mate.
Bruce.

Many thanks for taking time to respond:

Ed: We don't talk about "Collingwood" in this house
... we wont even read a black and white newspaper.:D

Artme: A Google search of "punty bush" has a lot of info.

Calm: Beads rolled. Probably see Ken at club tomorrow
and check his reactions. or :2tsup:

Bellyup: Hollowing done with a Forstner bit. Finish was a
couple of hits with Ubeaut EEE and three coats of
Ubeaut Glow. Very light applications and really
burnished them in with lathe on high speed.

Allan, don't listen to Calm. He persists in living in Ballarat at -10 degrees, for 3 months a year, so say no more. :D

I don't agree either with David's comments about the finial. IMHO the finials only need to be delicate when the rest of the piece demands it. Not so in your case (though I would have liked the finial to point sharply at the end).

Nice work and thanks for sharing it with us. :2tsup:

Skew ChiDAMN!!
8th September 2009, 11:02 PM
It looks fine to me. :2tsup:

And I reckon the finial is about the right size for the dimensions of the box. I'd have liked the details on it to be crisper, with a bit more definition, but on a well-loved box that's the shape they'd end up wearing into anyway. :U

Allan, after having a close look at your box, I think you did a great job. I agree with Skew, the size and shape of the finial suit the dimensions of the box. No hose fittings here. Leaving the knot in the side of the box added character to the overall piece, well done.

Allan a bit like some of your jokes - thread started on 7th and 2 weeks later some of them start to get it:D:D:2tsup::2tsup:

I still reckon Jeff could do with being a bit thinner - introduce him to John's diet:p:p (i never said the finial needed to be thinner i said 2 others would reckon that:D:D:?:?)
