View Full Version : An interesting casting idea (for me anyway)

Seeing the postage stamps cast in clear resin made me start thinking, which is unusual.

Would it be possible to cast a newspaper clipping in clear resin? The reason i would like to do this is to make a pen from a birth notice for a friends son.

Yes you can, either print it on a label or be sure to seal the original before casting.

Yes you can but you have to seal it before you cover it with resin.

So what is it that you use to seal the paper with first?

You can use spray varnish or WOP.

I would scan the newspaper and print out a copy AFTER doing some cleanup in
a photo editing program.

Newspaper is very thin, and everything will show through it. You will see that even
when you scan it.. you can see the ink from the other side of the page.
And when you get newspaper wet (like with resin) it's translucent. Not what
you need for casting.

Once you clean it up in the photo editor, you can print it out on your label so
that it looks like the original, but it has the qualities you need for casting.
(opacity, color, contrast etc.)

To scan or photocopy, use a BLACK backing sheet, to effectively "erase" the printing on the reverse side of the original. Use the copy for embedding.
