What type of steel is best for the headstock spindle on a woodlathe?

If you are talking about machining one up ,
I would use 4140 as it relatively easy to machine.

Yes, go with what Grahame has said. 4140 is easy to find and is ideal for job. It wont wear as fast as mild steel by screwing things on it and it can be heatreated if you want.
