calling Adelaide woodturners

Hi All,

I'm a final year Interior Architecture student at Uni SA. As part of my project I am required to design and construct [myself or with the help of others] a full-scale furniture piece to be exhibited as part of a furniture exhibition at the end of the year. For this, I am thinking of woodturning two small pieces [bit bigger than coffee mugs], that are fairly simple in form.

Problem is, I know nothing about woodturning. So two options - learn very quickly myself [have basic tools available at Uni workshop] or hire someone to turn them for me.

From what I've read it seems pretty fiddley and technical and I have no time for TAFE courses etc...soo...anyone know of woodturners in Adelaide [or any woodturners reading this message!] I could get in contact with for woodturning advice/pricing/view to commision?

Alternatively, what are the chances of me producing two lovely bowls myself?

The design is not concrete yet, but I'd like to work out how viable and affordable a venture like this may be. And if a woodturner is able to provide his/her services, I'd like to consult them about the design/design possibilities.

Research Woodgroup SA on the web and contact the secretary listed. He will put you in touch with some of the fine woodturners in our group. Alternatively, join Woodgroup for a small annual fee and you are welcome to join one of the turners groups and learn from the masters. Good luck with your project.

G'day.

'Tis a pity I'm in Cairns... about 4 days drive, (unless you don't sleep) or
almost a whole day on a commercial carrier, away.

I have a 4' branch of VERY interesting Gidgee that has a pink band between
the pale yellow sapwood & the almost black/brown heartwood.

I am LOOKing for ideas.
It's about 2.5 to 3" in diameter (60 to 75mm new money)
So far, I've made a tall (8", 20mm) candle holder & a couple of
short (2",50mm) tealight holders.

Can you draw?
Send me a drawing & I'll send you pair of 'something.'
PS. I hate goblets... I'm a SERIOUS wine drinker & only like wine out of glass.
(unless I'm desperate, then I'll STOOP to china or {shudder} pottery)
(I'd drink it out of the bottle before I'd drink out of wood or plastic.)
Vases, candle holders, pen holders, paper weights,(good at them) mallets,
gavels,(yuk) sex aids, (yikes?!!!!) bottle stoppers, (tall & short) coasters, etc.
I also do designer firewood. (heaps of that)

Seriously... I am looking for NEW ideas... if you can draw something that is
smooth & simple, I am interested... I'll supply the timber & the freight...
I am looking for the ideas. I can do a plain & simple STUNNING shape, in a plain grain, with a textured finish, or a plain & simple STUNNING shape,
in a "figured" grain in a satin or shiny finish.

I'm a computer tech, 25 years now... very logical... very right brained (?)...
I have "artist" heritage BUT... I can copy anything from a plan & plan nothing.

A designer I am not.

My design has changed greatly since then - but I am interested in your offer still :)
I'll email you some ideas when I have the time, just for fun if you like [what are you doing over christmas..!] ? It would be an interesting project!

Lisa, i recently got a small lathe and was making decent bowls pretty quickly so that method may improve yr skills and get ui there, beside sits fun.
