Just got my Woodcraft email newsletter and one of the items they are promoting is a book called 'The Complete Guide to Sharpening' by Leonard Lee. They have a page where you can read one of the opening chapters which I found very interesting and revealing. So, check it out:

It is a good book on sharpening. He covers all the tools. He was the founder of Lee Valley

Thanks for the reference Wayne. I recall seeing some similar SEM pics in an article on sharpening in a recent copy of Fine Woodworking.

I bought it a couple of years ago, and would recommend it to anyone!

About the only omission is instruction on sharpening scissors, and I'd love to hear from anyone with a clue on that.

Cheers,

I managed to revieve a couple of pairs of scissors on my Tormek using
the instructions in the book that came with it.

Cliff, How to you rate the Tormek? (ease of use and value)

I'd love to buy one but it seems a lot of brass.

G'day.

Good, expensive, VERY SLOW!!!

I took some of the fittings off it for the gouges & adapted them to my
regular dry white wheel grinder.

I still use the Tormek for other things/tools but it's not fast enough for
shaping/sharpening my turning tools.

Hi Dave -

Won't be any bad words tomorrow....we're dropping the prices on 500 items, in advance of the catalogue mailing next month....and if the difference is significant - we mail refund cheques unsolicited to those who've purchased the items since June.... sure way to get lots of head swelling letters!

Thanks for the kind comments -

Cheers -

I ordered this book and a few others back in June this year from Taunton press and I'm still waiting even though they were ex stock. :(

Is this sort of delay from Taunton normal - if so I might not consider them for future buys

Hi folks,

Just picked up the book from Borders in the mall, $49.95 only read a few bits so far, and am impressed with the detail and explanations.

I just hope that I don't become one of those that sits around sharpening things all the time, oh well back to the grindstone. :D

Mark,
I've always found Taunton to be THE best US company to deal with. I have had a problem on one occasion where a package was tampered with, resulting in NO book! I emailed them, and the air-expressed the replacement, it arrived four days later, which was astonishing I thought.

Sometimes there are delays with sea-freight. Why not send them an email to see if they can cast light on the delay?

Cheers,

P

I agree it's an excellent book. I reckon I'll be referring to it for many years - an essential reference book for all woodies. It's amazing how much I didn't even realise I didn't know, until I started reading this book.
