View Full Version : Miniature spindle sander?

I was wondering if there is such a thing as a miniature spindle sander on the market for model/toy making. I have a project that I want to get on with but I need a very small spindle sander for some of the small parts I will be working on.
I have experimented with dowels with sandpaper glued around them and then using them in the drill press. I guess this would do the trick but I thought there maybe a amall miniature version of the bigger spindle sanders The drillpress idea is not really to my likings. I use the drill press upright which presents the workpiece I want to sand with the sanding part of the dowel coming from overhead and not from the bottom which seems a bit awkward, I can't use the router table, which would be ideal but the speed of the router would be much too fast for sanding small timber items.
I guess I could try and rig something up on the lathe but I would prefer the sanding spindle to come up through a table top, would be much easier.
Have a Dremel type tool but the sanding drums are too small for what I want to do. I needa spindle that is around 30mm wide
Well that's the problem so look forward to any ideas you may have.

The Porter Cable oscillating spindle sander has sleeves from 1/2 inch up to 2 inches. An outfit called Woodhaven sells inserts that allow you to use the sander inverted (table mounted).

John the shaper may do what your after or such as a DremelI have a Dremel look alike tool but the little spindle on the bits that came with it are too short for what I want to sand. I see Carba-tec have some longer bits so I may take a look at those.

Use your drill John
The way to overcome coming from the top.is to drill a hole in a lump of wood just larger than your sanding drum.Lift your drill table up till the hole it higher than the bottom of sanding drum and clamp the wood. Now you have a spindle sander

Will give it a try tomorrow.

Daughter recently went to a Nail/manacurist supplier warehouse where she picked up a bag of small sanding tubes that fit the dremel about $10 for a bag of 50 these are 80 grit but they also have finer.

Well here it is and hey, it works. cost was a length of dowel $2 . Glued the sandpaper on with PVC and it holds well. I may still have to put a guide on the board so I can do repeat sanding if I need to but seems like I am ready to go. :):2tsup: Thanks guys and thanks for the idea Ross.

You paid $2.00 for a bit of dowel??@@#
You could have turned it up from a bit of hardwood in your lathe:D:D

It might help to have an indentation spot on the dowel for the abrasive to sit in and it avoids the glued edge picking up.

You could even try to stick a vacuum hose underneath the hole in the board if there is enough room between the spindle and hole

I made this from an old band saw motor and some drums from
Harbor Freight.

I have used it heavily for almost a year and if I had to do it over.
I would not change one thing.

The top is a piece of stick down floor tile.

Big drum.

Small drum; with table from the old band saw.

One nice thing, I didn't even have to take the wires off, everything
just came out together.

Here are the drum, I bet you can find some down there some place.

- Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=35455)

I had to file a bit off the shaft to get the drums on.

The air blows out the top of the motor so there is never much
dust under the table.

Looking good PAPA.

That place quoted me some ridiculous price for freight.I cant remember what I wanted to get now.I havent seen these drums in Aussie.Anyone know where to get them?

Papa, dont you need something to hold it to the table base, or is it that the motor is heavy enough?

If I get a new bandsaw, I might try making a copy.

It is heavy enough for most use. Sometimes I put a block of
wood between it and the wall so it won't slide back. Some rubber
feets would take care of it, but I keep forgetting to pick some up.
