Seeking opinion on whether a couple of biscuits could replace a loose tenon. I am currently making a Lutyens Garden Bench (Fine Wood Working #143 Aug 2000). The basic size of the timber is 1.5in x 3.25in and the article has a loose tenon for all the joints. Because of the length of the timber it would be difficult for me to put mortises on the ends. Would it be feasible and strong enough to replace this with a double biscuit joint.

The large crest rail on the back is joined in the middle with a loose tenon, along with the back verticals and bottom rails.

Attached is the cover of the mag with a general gist of the chair.

No, biscuits will not do the job.

Alternatives to think about would be tenons on the long pieces rather than loose tenons or dowels.

Thanks Mat, will take your advise. It is a bit late to put tenons on as the timber is cut and shaped to length. I will have to go with the loose tenons and cut the mortises by hand. Trying to take the easy way out.

Do you know anyone with a Festool Domino or could this be your excuse to buy one?
