Any idea whether they are going to:
1. have a temporary home and come back; or
2. move to another home; or
3. go out of business?

hmm, what a shame. I haven't dropped in there often (goodies are often too hard to carry home on the train  ), but when you needed them they were great.

Will have to check the sale and see what can be dragged home...

Cheers,
Dave

B*gger, b*gger, b*gger!!!

For the first time in several years, I was in Sydney CBD today, and thought about wandering into Paul's, but didn't.

I get home to see this!

Is this reverse fate? A punishment for making too many pens or something?

Cheers,
Andrew

Paul's was always a handy place to stop if you were working in the city and had left some vital tool back at the office.
I walked past them today and didn't even notice the sale.:((

[Is it the same Pauls who used to have a store at the other end of Pitt Street near to the now defunct Radio House?]

They are looking for another home - this was dropped on them last Friday. They have been told for about 3 odd years that something was going to happen ... well

Ray
Ya bugga. At least at lunchtime I get out of the office - otherwise I'm just drooling at me desk. Pauls has been a big part of my life - at least I've spent a lot of time and money there :p.
and IMHO Dymocks doesn't have the range of woodies books it once had :C

snowyskiesau
Yeah I walked past meself and thought - did I see that, so had a good look on the way back.
Dunno where else they might have been as they've always been where they are now since I moved to Sydney (22 years ago )

arose62
Andrew - you have sinned - fancy visiting the big smoke and not dropping into Pauls - shame shame

Dave
What's wrong with stockpiling in the office and coming down with vehicle on a weekend? Or you could double park outside on a Sat morning ( and no doubt make a contribution to the parking cops xmas dinner)

I believe so - they used to have several branches around the city, including one at the northern end of George St, about opposite the Newcastle Hotel.
They used to sell stuff of their own brand - Paulcall - that was top quality.

Thanks for this, SD. I have nothing but happy memories of Paul's in the QVBldg, was it?, in the 1950s- '60s and, then, Penrith.

Sydney, particularly, was a great store with an eye-watering range of tools all available to handle, and the staff knew the game.

In the early 1960s, I think it would have been, I was looking at something in their new range of 'cheaper' tools, and the cove said, "You don't want to buy one of those!!"

How many times must he turn over in his grave these days?

I too have happy memories of Pauls I still have some tools that I bought there the Paulco clamps that they said were unbreakable and over the years I have proved them right But by far the best buy was a Towa electric plane I bought it 55 years ago for Sixty pounds nearly three weeks wages. As far as I know these were the only ones available at the time.
The plane has been used on hundreds if not thousands of doors to fit them. And the best part I still use it and the spare driving belts haven't been used yet. I bought a Makita plane for a wider cut, but It was a toy to the old Towa. They have a long base and a joy to use.

I've got a pair of those clamps, about 40 years old. Must have been on special 'cause I wouldn't have had any project I needed them for I don't think.
Were they in the QVB in the '50s? Don't remember them there. Nock & Kirby's were there I think, or just down the road. Great range of stock, if you could ever find someone to serve you.

Seems that Pauls has become the hangout of forum members... Bumped into Sawdust Maker and Wongo at lunch. Good to see you and fun to spend money 'cos the stuff might be cheap :D

Nock and Kirbys were up George St a bit opposite Grace Bros (Myers). The store went on to become a BBC hardware before closing a couple of years ago.

Well I ended up with an exciting stash. A box of disposable P2 dust masks and an allen key set. I umm'ed and ahh'ed over a 8" Abbot and Ashby industrial bench grinder that was $189 less 30% (~$130), same one listed at Hare and Forbes for $210. Decided it would be too heavy to drag home on the train and somebody else bought it before I left. i think I regret not buying it, though when I mentioned it to LOML she indicated that I took the wise course of action :D

There are two other hardware stores in the CBD - Sunlite Hardware, one on York Street and the other one on Pitt Street near Martin Place. The service there is excellent. You should give them a shot.

Mention of Nock and Kirby's brought back memories. Who remembers Joe the Gadget Man on TV on Sat mornings?

And yes, I have a pair of Paulcall clamps, bought over 40 years ago, still going strong with weekend usage.

I was walking by this afternoon and saw the sign.

I asked the question how much time before they close. About 2 - 3 weeks. I saw some good deals and thought I should take this and take that. The problem was I only had one back pack and that was already full with paperwork. My time was short as I was heading towards a meeting. So I picked up some the bolts. :U

I know I want to go back and get some more items but the timing is horrible. I guess if you are in the city and you want to take a look might be worth a look. You just never know. :o

I believe that they have to be out by the 18th November. The boss would be happy to relocate, but as Wongo said, they can't seem to find a suitable site in the City - he also said that one of the young chaps might take to the Internet selling stuff - don't know if he's looking at EBay or direct sales from his own site.

Most of the power tools have gone, but there is a fair selection of hand tools still there, plus boxes of fasteners - wood screws, regular nuts & bolts, masonry anchors - stuff....Quite a lot of Carb-i-tool router bits too. A lot of safety gear has been snapped up by the tradies but there is still some stock.

The gardening, plumbing & paint sections are still fairly full of stock - probably because they are furthest from the door :B

Hard to forget it Uncle was the fellow who owned the Engravers stand under the escalators/stars in NK's then BBC till they closed their doors. He moved into the Strand Arcade I think it was across the road till he retired. I always stirred him saying he was Joe's look a like or twin bother.

PS Paul's also had a store on Canturbury Rd Bankstown some where in the late 70's early 80's

And immediately after Joe was on, I seem to recall it was Championship Wrestling, hosted by the famous Ron Casey, and featuring the beautiful Garibaldi brothers and a bloke named Gorgeous George.

Didn't Ron get in to a fist fight with Normie Rowe on TV years later? That was the last I ever saw of him.

The memory is fading. Those were the good old days :)

Not Ron Casey  a little weed of a fellow can't recall his name. EDIT Announcers name was Jimmy Little do a Yuotube serch and you'll find some old footage of wrestling and Jimmy.
but here's a flash back. World Championship Wrestling (Australia) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Championship_Wrestling_%28Australia%29)

I used to see Kangaroo Kennedy at his home town of Tea Gardens often he owned the Real Estate agency there.

I remember the old Pauls' stores well. I got my first ever job there after leaving school & during uni vacations. They had 3 stores in those days. In the QVB, Pitt Street and Bankstown which I think was their warehouse and also retail outlet.

There was never any problem in getting served in those days because there were heaps of shop assistants (me included) behind counters serving customers. Their biggest opposition was Nock & Kirby's (remember Handy Andy and Joe the Gadget man on Channel 9 on Saturday mornings?)

Nock's were much bigger, they had 4 storeys as opposed to Pauls' one but Nock's couldn't hold a candle to them as far as customer service went. Funny enough, a few years later my brother went to work for Nock's and was the manager of the ground floor section but left after a couple of years after they were taken over by BBC (later Hardwarehouse and later still, Bunnings).

The present Paul's store is about 5% of the floor space of the old QVB store. Am sorry to see them go. Often drop in when I'm in town. Unfortunately, I don't think there's another hardware store in the city, is there?

Cheers

If memory serves me correctly, I think one of the announcers on WCW was a chubby little American chap called Sam Menaker.

This past week I have been able to pick up a few things. As only a few things can be picked up by me, a little hard to carry things.

Well I was able to go during my lunch hour on the way back from a meeting and in the afternoon. It was the afternoon that I met up with a fellow whom was the owner of the store. I must say that he is a real gentleman of a human being.

For some reason I seem to recall him from somewhere. We got to talking about Wood working shows and trade shows and I mention this site. He knew about this site.

I was surpose to get the web address but silly me seems to have misplaced it or forgotten to pick up. :C

Also confirmed - there will be an online version of Paul's Hardware after they close to street front store. It will be run by David's son with some help from a computer wise friend. They are still working on setting up the on-line store, it should use the same URL.

Checked the new website today. It is starting to happen, you can create and account, but there is no other content - no terms and conditions and no stock. But at least this suggests that it is really going to happen.
