A big hip-hip-hooray for Wood Borer for last nights beer, wine, pizza and bull dust session http://www.ubeaut.biz/thumbupwink.gif

The activities kicked off with Craigb, , Wood Borer and myself huddled around Borers prized ‘little’ collection of hand planes, fervent to give each one a bit of a run, except for who was happy looking on, giving a few pointers and generally making sure Craig and myself didn’t devalue Borers collection too much.

We had a bit of a play with the Mujingfang planes that Craig smuggled across the Mexican border and after a bit of a touch up on the water stones and a bit of a bash here and there with a lump of wood we managed to get a shaving out of one – not bad for four blokes who didn’t have the faintest idea about which way up the bevel should go! (Derek, you would have been horrified)

We tried out Derek’s method (?) for flattening water stone on some plasterboard ‘fly screen’ sandpaper and to the surprise of the crowd it worked like a charm – five water stones flattened in ten minutes! Then came the comparison – King v’s Norton water stones finished with some green crayon., and the winner is…. my sandvik chisel which is now nice and shiny.

After many beers, a bottle of red and a few cups of tea it soon dawned on us that unless we wished Borer and Meg farewell that it would in fact be dawn.

Having moved on from the safety game I was happy to find that it’s out of my system already as I managed not to say anything to Wood Borer about the state of play in his shed, including the dust and shavings a foot deep on the floor, the gas heater, the suspicious looking DIY electrical job, …….. :D

If ever you want to see structural cob webs and wood shaving used as insulation in the old fashioned way, Wood Borers shed is a must see :D I hope the new shed is as homely.

Best wishes to Rob, Meg, Craig and ,
Mark :)

Eastie,

The pleasure was ours and we are happy you enjoyed yourselves.

We look forward to the next visit.

I didn't realise there were safety standards for cobwebs. Anyway it shows that the shed is healthy otherwise all the redbacks and those big black spiders would have turned up their 8 legs by now

Al,

There wasn't a general invitation because I only have a bar sized beer fridge.

Originally it was an invite to Craig but Eastie and wanted to catch up with Craig which after many detailed calculations made me reach the conclusion the lemon tree could only take so much  Volume of a combination cylinder/cone compared with the volume of a sphere, erosion, drainage, water table ....

Not to mention what it does to the lemons :D

Silent,

Good to see your brain is sharp at this hour of the day

Good point, lemons are good for Vitamin C which must be close to Vitamin B (VB) so yes my lemons must be extra healthy for you. Do you want me to send you some? :D

When the lemon tree is eventually ripped out to make room for the new shed will the timber take a finish?

Just wanted to add that I had a great time at Mr Borer's too.

I definititely can't fault the Mexican hospitality, absolutely fantastic. :)

You blokes have definitely raised the bar for us northerners (some unkind people call us cockroaches  )

This all sprung from a request from moi for directions to Melbourne Carbatec.

Before I knew it, I had Eastie offering to drive me there, an invite to Borer's shed, and a dinner invite from .

Well done guys, and thanks from a grateful Sydneysider.

It sure was better than sitting in a hotel room or associating with a bunch of computer nerds. :D

Cheers

I sure did. Even managed to do it by PT. It was easy peasy in the end.

Actually as you probably know Carbatec are having a moving sale. 10% off floor stock.

I picked some of that green honing stuff and a Marples marking gauge.

I wonder if I can give them to the missus as a souvenier of Melbourne ? :D

Very clever Craig,

If you get your missus into the woodwork then you will have to get another bench and another bandsaw and another thicknesser and another cyclone and eventually a bigger shed.

These interstate visits are really worthwhile, the exchange of ideas is beneficial to everyone.

Yes but what about poor old Wood Borer's lemon tree? Huh??

To Mr W. Borer. Please don't mention SWMBO taking up woodwork. I've just about got my shed set up the way I want it and have a list from her indoors that will keep me going for quite some time thank you. Now she is mumbling about her getting into a scroll saw. OK I appreciate her interest but I haven't planned for one of these ungodly critters in my shed and I can hear it now, "Sweetheart will you make me a frame for this little thingamebob that I've just hacked about".
To say nothing of when the neighbourhood gang drop by for an in-depth discussion on the finer points of woodwork ( up) she'll want to join in and I cant afford the grog she can drink.
Have mercy :D

I am sorry Termite,

Do you want me to edit my previous post to save your skin/tools/shed/credit card/fridge/cellar?

Just say the word and I will happily comply because I realise what's at stake.

Al,

Your name was mentioned quite a few times by each one of us, just as well you weren't there to hear what we said.

:D You would not have fitted out the door because of a swollen head because it was all positive. We did try hard to bad mouth you but none of us could think of anything bad to say about you.
