Does anybody have experience with metal detectors to locate nails/staples in second had timber?
Any advice or comments appreciated.

Similar units are still on ebay but the prices vary.

I bought one from Jaycar about a year ago. It's a cheap version of the sort of thing they have at the airport or in some nightclubs: a flat paddle about 30cm long and 5cm wide, has LEDs for power on and detection, a socket for headphones, two sensitivity levels and runs on AAA batteries.

It makes a wild squealing noise when it find a nail or something. I tried it on my dog when she came home with a plate in her leg, and she was definitely not impressed...

i bought the cheapest I could find for milling finds side ways nails fine but end on a bit harder but in second timber they are on the surface or just under so not a problem.
