A client has asked me if I can treat a transverse slice from a Euorpean Elm tree, about 90cm diameter. Having counted the rings, he would like to display it indoors with labels noting significant events. I think this is a cool idea. Clearly if allowed to dry out it will develop radial cracks. I have heard that Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) aka Carbowax can be used to permeate soft or spongy timbers and make them workable, eg spalted timber for wood turning, and wondered if timber treated with it would resist shrinkage. Anyone out there had any experience with the stuff?
