:D Hello everyone,

I am wanting to build a solid body electric guitar. I need something to cut out the body and a few other bits and pieces. I was going to splash out on a top notch makita or bosch jigsaw because it would be useful for lots of things (and my dad could use it) and it's not really something that you want to go really cheap on. but the guy at mitre 10 (and a friend of mine) recommended this jigsaw. http://www.gmcompany.com/index.cfm?ppage=products&pparentcategory_uuid=B7650DDE-9A0B-45D2-99D8E45BB56248FF&pcategory_uuid=B7650DDE-9A0B-45D2-99D8E45BB56248FF&pproduct_uuid=D7187EF4-6C49-467D-93FBE3F405482465 A GMC. I always thought GMC were not so good, but apparently this one is good. :D

He said the pendulum action is smoother and more acurate, that the quality is good (especially compared to the price) that it would be powerful enough to cut what I want it to, and that the turning blade thing would be just what i needed.

Being the sceptic that i am, I always like to get a neutral 2nd opinion.

Does anyone know if this is any good, worth the money, etc, had any experience....
I'm not going to be abusing it, it won't be cutting metal or anything hard like that and i'm (fairly) patient, so I'm not going to push it too hard.

I'd appreciate your valued opinions and expertise.
This is the timber I will be cutting. The rosewood is about 35mm thick...It's pretty thick and hard (i think) so I was just wondering if that jigsaw would be ok, or what would be best. Any opinions on my timber would also be appreciated, from those more experienced.
Thank you very much!!

Thanks geoff,

I think it's the same price at Mitre 10 at the moment too, they all seem to match each other...:D

Have you used it or know of anyone who's used it? and found it good/bad/ugly??

GMC have a satisfaction guarantee on (many if not all) of their products so if you return within 30 days you get a full refund.
In that case buy it - try it and if you are unhappy return it.

This is a bit off topic.

I was at Maton guitars this week having a look through there factory. They have two CNC routers doing the job you require.

Really quite amazing to watch them cut out the sound chambers and other parts of the guitar.

i bought a GMC jigsaw about 3 years ago.

It was a poor decision.

The design was dreadful.

Blade changing was hopeless.

And I didn't like the cutting action

Nor did I think much of the blades.

I think GMC have picked up their act since

For this thing would not have lasted in my shed for 48 hours with the 30 day money back satisfaction guarantee.

The newer one looks quite impressive.

But not as impressive as looking at the Maton guitars being manufactures I'm sure.
Now that sounds like something worthwhile.

Anyway good luck with the guitar and purchase

Thank you all for your comments,

I am currently deliberating whether to buy a bandsaw or a jigsaw...

The general consensus at the http://www.projectguitar.com forum is that a bandsaw would be better, although a jigsaw would work.

For the amount I'll be doing, I reckon I'll get a jigsaw, because that will be way more handy for me than a bandsaw (And cheaper)...

Obviously I'll need something half decent...but the guy at Mitre 10 reckoned that the GMC was up there (I wasn't so sure).... I've also had DeWalt, Makita and Porter Cable recommended to me....

Since you guys all know your stuff....Could someone just recommend one for me...

It will need to be able to hand cutting through 1 1/2" thick hardwood...That's about the worst it would get. And I wouldn't be pushing it particularly hard...If it needed a rest, i'd just stop...I have about AU$200...that's about my maximum, but if there's something good for around $250..I guess I could stretch it..

I look forward to your advice,

Thanks very much ,
