I recently finished this piece that had been sitting around the workshop for some time, needing lots of hand sanding. The impetus to finish it was that I entered it in the Australian Wood Design Exhibition, an event held in Orbost Vic. each year, so I did the hours of hand sanding it needed and made the lid and finial. It was done entirely on the lathe except for the two cut out sections. Made from a piece of fiddleback redgum and finished with danish oil and 3 coats of a flat nitrocellulose lacquer.

The Exhibition offers prizes in a number of categories including woodturning and they also have an Aquisitional prize where they will buy a piece for their collection. My piece got the Aquisitional prize. It will help to pay the Christmas bills!!

+1 what Ed said. A worthy gloat indeed. A bit challenging to visualize the ways the piece was mounted to turn the various surfaces. Hope it was a BIG prize, commensurate with all your hard work.

A really stunning piece with lots of planning and thought involved. You didn't mentioned the size of the piece, not that that really matters, Congratulations on an excellent piece well done.
