Please help identify old timber

3 years ago we uncovered a log 2-3m underground on river flats in Northern NSW. It is very black in colour.

Can anyone advise where I could find out what it is and perhaps the age of it?

I've got some Bog Red Gum that sounds similar. Hard to tell how old without carbon dating, depends on how big the log is. Mine came from a very large tree, and it would take a long time to get black all the way through, so my guess was 500-5000 years underground old
