The wheel has spun around to me to host another turning event. This time the Western side of Melbourne gets to sleep in :)

I am planning for it to be on Sunday 31 January.

Where: Hoppers Crossing (address will be PM'd later)
When: 31 January
Start: 0930 to about 4.

Please post your interest here so I can get an idea of numbers.

Also, as I am a novice turner (read - beginner) demonstrators are welcome.

Something I haven't seen yet at one of these events is an emphasis on finishing techniques. Maybe if our host turns up he could show us something.

Funny you should mention that.

On the 2oth Feb we have the annual club get together here with about 6 clubs attending.

This year is finishing with Jim Carroll demonstrating U beaut and Ken Wraight demonstrating his gallery finish.

Neil isn't back until end of February.

Greg good luck on getting someone to demo sanding

- Ern would no doubt br the best/expert/authority on this subject but unfortunately his broken wing would prevent him from Demo although i have no doubt he would instruct you on the correct use/placement of sandpaper:D:D:D:p:p:p

Do you have a set of 65mm (inside diameter) shark jaws and i will have a go at a pepper grinder. I will bring the drills etc.

can do the outside.:2tsup::2tsup:

I'm in.

Happy to chat about faceplate work finishing but there'll be plenty of other talent there to contribute as well.

PS amend that to lead a discussion on ...

Peeps could list finishing probs they'd like to get some tips on
eg. avoiding ripples due to distinct well-spaced early and late growth

I would have liked to attend, but it is a bit of a travel for me. Besides, there is an annual religious event that I have to observe that day.

Hi Groggy,
I will attend if all goes well ,will confirm closer to the date.
What can I bring to help with the day?:?
I will bring some Atlantic Cedar,
I have turned a small bowl from this timber,it was dry and finished well, coated with Organ oil and a week later it has become all sticky the resin came through the finish:~
Has anyone used this timber:?Would shellac prevent this from happening:?
Our club has had a lot of this timber ,just received another trailer load of logs the other day:;
Regards

Solution thanks to Neil was to scrub the bowls out with meths and then 4 coats of ubeaut Hard Shellac.

One of these from our sponsor or similar ...

Groggy

yep, got one

Mine was pulled out of shape by the packaging being too tight and has not recovered its true round shape (1 year on) so it gets a bit bumpy. Note to anyone buying them, they don't get their shape back so make sure it isn't deformed in its packaging.

Grumpy John
15th January 2010, 09:42 PM

No had that done Ern but could do with a new chain & sprockets (tight spots) need to find supplier, the Ballarat shop & i have differences of opinion, need a mail order post job - too lazy to follow it up, walking after losing the chain will probably jog my memory.

Left Ballarat 10.40 am - beautiful sunshine - got to Drysdale about 11.55 - rained from Bannockburn in to Geelong city - not impressed when I come from beautiful sunny Ballarat:no::no::no:

Cheers

David, since you'll be demo'ing like a whizz, could you kick off the day?

The stuff and I will be doing would be a logical follow on.
