converting an existing dust extractor

has any one here converted a micronair hurricane dust extractor to a cyclone ,i have one of these and to say the least it is usless as an extractor ,it has all the necessary parts in theory to be a very good machine but the one part (the filter) is so prone to clogging up that it is a weekly job to take out the filter from inside the machine ,then water blast the filter then wait for a couple of days for it to dry out enough to draw air through it :~.so i am thinking about making it into a cyclone ,the body is about 900mm round and i want to put the cyclone under it .

no it has a rotating arm thats on a timer that pumps compressed air directly onto the filter blowing dust particles off ,the idea is sound but the filter clogs up too quickly ,i have it hooked up to my flatbed router 3600 x 1800 it worked well when it had a new filter but i think that the fine dust from the router is getting into the filters pores and being driven in by the air

Id contact them and ask their opinion, cant hurt they may have an upgrade to handle the dust from your machine.

i,ve ran them several times about the machine and all i get from them is "it shouldnt be doing that " hello !!!!!!!!!!!!!! i know it shouldnt be doing that but it is ,
i am planning to build a new factory this year and they can be rest assured that when dust extraction planning comes around they wont be in the mix

just to update you guys ,the manufacturer emailed me and said that the dust extractor isnt designed to extract fine dust (i thought by the very term dust is dust).but he would give me a partial refund if i bought an extra cyclone system from him ,but first i would have to rip all the pleats from the new filter he sold me ($400)so that the cyclone could do its work .
well that seemed a tad waste of time and more money to me .so i did rip the pleats off the new $400 filter and was left with the casing ,then i went and bought some high density 75mm thick foam and contacted it to the drum of the cartridge leaving no spaces for the dust to sneak past ,then i threw away the rotating air cleaning syetem that shot air at the filter from jets about 75mm apart ,i replaced this with a plastic arm into which i had drilled a row of 3mm holes every 5 mm for the length of the arm ,replaced the lot ,turned on the extractor and all hell broke loose ,i had this constant stream of dust and shavings filling the collector for about 2 minutes ,after the pipes were now cleaned of residue dust i shut the inlet down to within 25mm of being completley closed this now provides more than enough air to suck your eye through your proverbial .all that grief for $15 worth of parts and some late night thought with a brew

Have you had a look at Bill Pentz's stuff - really pins down the science and engineering of cyclones, how they work and their limitations. Help you sort the hype from the data next time round, and perhaps on fixing the existing one.
