I'll get in quick cause I know where he's at right now ................no not at the lathe but banging heads.

He has the bug

LOML and I had a great morning with NZ Carver Dave, who has joined the ranks of turners.:2tsup: let alone his other woodwork as carver, carpenter, and cabinet maker.

Unfortunate the turn of events has frustrated Dave that I will leave to him to explain.

Here he is turning his first bowl/vessel camphor ................. the dig in was mine.:B

Dave has been practicing he's done some fine work but needs a chuck.

Thanks for the Olive wood Dave. :2tsup::2tsup:

Good to see:2tsup:

If he is into carving he should be able to come up with some interesting pieces by combining both skills. Look forward to seeing his work:)

Thats certainly an aggresive look on his face, is he trying to turn or hurt the wood.

Remind him that turning is like carving a delicate touch is all that is needed and sharp tools.

tools were sharp see photo's which show shavings flying off nice.

Now recall when you first did something new and you knew could injure, maime or damage what you were so lovingly trying to make or yourself. The way it made that certain muscle pucker like a duck.

He will relax over time as we all do not to much I hope and he's got the ideas to run with it.
Keep an eye out for some stunning stuff and I'd say with in less than 12 months this young fellow will be after a bigger lathe.:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup: He's already eyeing Pat's off.

He is not a Kiwi .
He has told us that . What he has not told us , is why he labels himself NZ Carver .
It is possible the NZ does not relate to New Zealand at all .

What's in a name?

The carving guru of our local Woodcraft Guild reckons that turning is only "motorized carving" anyhow ..... :U

Good one - my response to him was that carvers are only frustrated turners who are too slow to cope with a moving target! :p

The only way to become a Kiwi is to be born one .

You have no say in the matter .

Sure there are other ways - Any successful Kiwi becomes an Aussie. And when they're on the nose again they go back to being a Kiwi :;

Just look at Russell Crowe :D :D :D

What part of this do you not understand ?
A person born in New Zealand is a Kiwi . No other human beings are .
They may claim to be , others may claim that they are , but that does not make it .

Whatever issues you have with 'NZ Carver' and your need to disassociate him from Australia is your problem .
Do not drag we Kiwi into it .

Think this is getting a little more serious than it needs to be. I was having fun with a joke, and no offence was intended. Many appologies.

Like Hughie I started my ww career with carving of a sort.

Did chopping boards out of thick oregon for a local craft shop. Went like hot cakes.

Distressed the end grain by power sanding out the early growth; rounded all the edges; carevd 2 pair of leeaves on diag corners of the face. Just outlines.

Like Hughie stillhave the tools & recently sharpened tehm just for fun
