hello,

Im new on this forum and i need your help please.

recently i wanted to create wooden cases for cell phones and my friend who is a wood crafter has created for me iphone cases like the picture below:

http://nsm02.casimages.com/img/2009/12/18/091218083426448705083310.jpg

But the problem is that the shape is very rectangle and the cases werent successful.

We want the cases to be more like the picture below:
http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_430xN.119604858.jpg

So our wood manufactured is a good artisan but i think that we may need wood handled routers to do that or some specialized machine to create such cases.

Can you please help me to be able to create such cases with the different tools that i need and why.

Thanks.

All you need for the case in the bottom photo is a router with a roundover bit and a straight bit for doing the cutouts and hollowing the interior.

I'd get the original piece of wood, cut it in half on the bandsaw, hollow out each half, glue it back together, go over the edges with the roundover bit and then make the cutouts.

Setting it up so you could use a template follower would make producing a quantity of them easier, but it's not really necessary on such a simple item.

That top box is absolutely beautiful.
Wish I could make something like that.

You do not buy a round-over router.
You buy a router and a round-over bit.
However, it may be an idea to read up on the use of routers before to adventure further.
Have a look at the profiles you get from the bits here
Woodworking Edge Profiles - Woodworking Router Bits and Profiles (http://woodworking.about.com/od/bladesbits/tp/Ten-Basic-Router-Bit-Shapes.htm)
or read a bit about how to use the router here
How To Use A Router Properly (http://www.insidewoodworking.com/howtousearouter.html)
How to use a Router | Home & Garden | Reader's Digest Australia (http://www.readersdigest.com.au/handyman/how-to-use-a-router/article149038.html)
It may just give you a little bit of an idea what to do

Hi chadchad and welcome to the forum,
I think what I and the other forum members are saying is that we can see how to make the second one quite easily but all think that the first one is beautiful!
Are you sure that the lack of local interest is the design or are there other reasons?
If you decide to use a router to make the second design PLEASE be careful. Routers can be dangerous,
good luck, fletty

hey

Well at first i thought it was beautiful until i figured that it doesn't sell as much as the other one.
So it seems this is the only reason.

It is made by many types of wood and mother of pearl.

Hey ChadChad
How much would the beautiful one sell for?
I would sure like something like that for my glasses and I have a few other ideas.

hey wollffie,

you mean you want to buy some?

So basically a turn over router is enough? doesn't a turnover works only in the corners of the case? Thanks.

Yes and there is also this one below:

This one is my favorite, this is what im trying to create, it just fits the cell phone and the shape is great. do you think that a simple roundover bit can do such shapes?
