has anyone tried making molds out of corian

it has a nice smooth finish but not sure if the resin will stick to it

i have bucket loads of it at the moment so it would make for cheap molds

look forward to any thoughts

I've used it for mold BOXES, but not for a mold. Resin will stick to it unless you can
find a good release. You can try warming some Petroleum Jelly and mixing that
with mineral spirits .. about 10% jelly .. shake like hell and put it in a small spray
bottle. Let the spirits evaporate, leaving the petroleum jelly as a release.

Try a small batch first, as I don't really know how well it will work. I think the hardest
part would be making sure you can take your mold apart. CA holds Corian well, but
you need a hammer to get it apart to de-mold. Perhaps a hot melt glue gun?

Also, be careful with Corian and heat. I hear it can explode :oo:

I've never heard of Corian exploding and can't imagine how hot it would have to be to do so.
I warm Corian to 270* to shape it.
Corian is nothing more than resin with fillers in it. I haven't tried using it as a mold, but my thought was it wouldn't work to good. Maybe the jelly will work or maybe try putting plastic or aluminum food wrap (Saran wrap) inside and tuck it in. That should let it pop out easily. I've used both of those with good results.

i thought it was a resin of some sort, which would mean that they should stick to each other

i might try it with glad wrap around each section

the plan was to bolt it all together to make getting the bits out easily
