Cool optical illusion. Nicely done :2tsup:

:hmm: Weird. Could nearly be just a shadow line. But my eyes hurt now so I can't look at it anymore.:C:D

Its clearly been photoshopped. You can tell from the grain on the endgrain of the bottom piece doesnt match the face grain.

Avaitors is right. Very right.
The piece of timber seems to have grain going up higher than the piece itself. It's a photoshop job..

Apparently not photoshopped.

I think I've figured it out and might try to make it myself over the weekend.

I didn't get to making it but I did play around with sketch-up and here is what I figured out. It's all a matter of viewing angle.

I think you got it close to right. The grain in the upper "piece" doesn't agree end vs. side either, and the screws are red herrings. The dark lines at the boundary indicate a joint or shadow line.

Congratulations and Cheers,
Joe

Never actually built one myself, but I think it's an illusion that will only work through a photograph.

I've attached the Google Sketchup file I threw together.

Cheers,
Af.
