Now is this the Jet version of the Chinese MC900/WL18, or is this the one the Chinese copied?

Didn't realise Jet made a MC900... How old do you reckon it is? I reckon quite old, say before the current line up of Jet lathes. It's not even painted white...

Mine is one of the old blues, ~7 years old but a 1442.

My Hafco WL18 was bought new in 2003, which means Jet was selling their equivalent alongside Hafco, Carba-tec et al. It's interesting that the one on eBay is listed as 6 speed, where the MC900/WL18 were/are all 10 speed AFAIK. That suggests that the Jet didn't come out of the same factory. I'm sure I remember seeing a white Jet that looked a lot like my WL18 a few years ago.

I was under the impression that the Jet was reverse engineered to create the MC900 and variations. Six speeds might have been an early beta version. Also note the power switch on this one is on the leg, not in the headstock as in the clones, which is (I think) better for construction and assembly.

[BTW, all the noise about the "same factory in China" lights up my BS detector, and has the ring of an urban legend. China's population is about 4 times that of the USA. How many times have you heard the expression, "the same factory in America?" The only one I'm certain of, and not very certain of at that, is the concrete balls used as bollards in front of Target stores - made in Wisconsin. And I (as well as a few other folks) know how to make them without casting seams, if it ever becomes necessary.]

Cheers,
Joe
