Woodshop Memberships

I have recently moved to Sydney from Canada, and I was hoping to keep my woodworking skills limber by cutting and assembling some furniture for my new place here. In British Colombia, I was a member of a public woodshop, which allowed members to come and use the equipment in the shop, assemble furniture, etc. I have seen nothing like this anywhere close by Sydney. Does this sort of members' workshop exist? Am I looking in the wrong place?

How long are you going to be in Oz for?

I'll be here for three or four years. It's difficult for me to stomach the thought of buying what I could make better and for less money.

There are TAFE collages around that do night courses in wood working. You can go there and just use the tools.

I was in Sydney for work for a couple of years, and I remember there is a place called "Henderson's" or similar that is a workshop where you can hire either machines individually or full use of the workshop by the hour. They had things like bandsaws, planers, tablesaws, radial arm saws, etc available at hourly rates, plus they run courses as well.

I may have the name wrong, but I recall pickin gup a brochure at the Sydney Woodwork Show at the Sydney Woodworkers Association stand - their website is www.woodworkersnsw.org.au - I am sure one of the contacts there can put you in touch (or maybe make join, make a friend and offer a few beers for use of their shop?). If not, try the Wood Works Book & Tool Company (City or Meadowbank stores), they should know.

There is a place in Lillyfield Road,Lillyfield (Near Victoria Road)and I reckon it is Hendersons .

Its called Hendermans - PH 9555 9949

I am sure they have an internet site too.

At Carbatec (Sydney) on the front counter there is a brochure for a place that offers woodworking lessons. They also say that you can use their workshop for an hourly fee. Sorry, I cant remeber the name

Check out the web site for Benchworks - www.benchworks.com.au (http://www.benchworks.com.au). They run classes, provide supervision for you own projects, and allow you to use their workshop.equipment at an hourly rate. They are at Emu Plains - a bit of a drive from Sydney, depending where you live.
