Are you hoping the birthday fairies will hear you?

I was thinking about getting a 10" Fine / Extra fine, and they're $249 (http://www.carbatec.com.au/dmt-duosharp-whetstones-accessories_c7330) at Carbatec, and not really any cheaper at any of the online retailers, but Ebay is $100 cheaper (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Sharpening-Stone-DMT-DuoSharp-10-Extra-Fine-Fine-/290423633036?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item439e98f48c#ht_581wt_1131)!

Birthday fairies will need long memories Richard!

I've just pulled the trigger on a 10" Duo Fine/coarse to replace my 8". Too many Muji blade top flattening exercises! Seems like I scored the last one from myknifesourcecom on ebay at AUD 150.

Your Muji should arrive tomorrow with any luck.

Lucky you!

Do you use yours for sharpening or just flattening?

Flattening mostly: plane irons, bench chisels and turning scrapers.

Shaping of bevels gets done on a grinder. On the first two of those I'll refine that bevel using a guide on this kind of stone, and then 1000 and 4000 JIS on ceramic stones.

Thanks. I think I'll put it on the list, maybe for Fathers Day, although that's still months away...

Hi,

I bought 2 DMT diamond sharpeners on Ebay, they were a bargain and work very nicely.

I have the Extra Coarse / coarse on 1 stone and fine / extra fine on the other. I use them now to shape the initial bevel and then progress onto a secondary bevel on my waterstones.

Not looking for a sharpening debate, but they are fast, simple and really effective. Recommend my set up as easy and relatively cheap. No need for a grinder (although I already had one, I hardly use it now).

My 10x4 Coarse/fine just arrived. Comes with a vinyl (?) stick mat. Also fits the existing DMT black plastic holder.

My smaller Duo will be promoted to ceramic stone flattener - though I still have doubts about how flat it is; will have to do some checking. Q is how. The V. straight edge is 40" long; a bit awkward. Maybe float glass, 3M micro-abrasive sheet stuck on it and a chalked face on the diamond?
